The Statue of Gudea and The Royal acquaintance of Memi and Sabu Name University of the People   The Statue of Gudea and The Royal acquaintance of Memi and Sabu According to the Cambridge dictionary, a Sculpture is “the art of forming solid objects that represent a thing, person, idea, etc. out of materials such as wood, clay, metal, or stone.". ‘Sculpture’ comes from the late 14c and is derived from the Latin word ‘sculptūra’ which means 'sculpt' (Sculpture, n.d.). Sculptures have always played a great role in the study of the past. They teach us about ancient lifestyles and religions. Most of the sculptures were made to represent the kings and Powerful personal of the time. although most of the ancient sculptures made of a perishable material such as wood have been disintegrated over time, However, Statues made of stronger materials such as stone and marble have survived long enough for us to study and preserve. Two of these statues that we will compare and contrast today are The Statue of Gudea and The Royal Acquaintance Memi and Sabu. The Statue of Gudea is from the Neo-Sumerian period from the Neo-Sumerian culture and date back to the ca. 2090 B.C. Made of Diorite. Diorite is a speckled, coarse-grained igneous rock consisting essentially of plagioclase, feldspar, and hornblende or other mafic minerals. The statue’s Geographical origin is Mesopotamia, probably from Girsu (modern Tello). “This sculpture belongs to a series of diorite statues commissioned by Gudea. Gudea had the temples of Lagash rebuilt and installed statues of himself in it. Many of his statues had his name inscribed on them. The Statue of Gudea depicts Gudea in a seated pose of a ruler before his subjects, his hands folded in a traditional gesture of greeting and prayer” (Statue of Gudea, n.d.). The Royal acquaintance of Memi and Sabu, on the other hand, is from the Old Kingdom period, dating ca. 2575–2465 B.C. unlike The Statue f Gudea this statue is made from limestone and was painted at the time, however, the paint has chipped off over time. The statue originates from Egypt; Probably from Memphite Region, Giza, and Western Cemetery. Even though Ancient Egypt is famous for the sculpture and statues of their Pharos, this Statue represents not Pharos but two people related to Royalty. (The Royal acquaintance of Memi and Sabu, n.d.). Even though the statues have many similarities. The Statue of Gudea is a lot older than the other. According to research Diorite is a lot more durable than limestone, Diorites is known to be more water, wind, scratch, and acid resistant than Limestone. It requires less maintenance. Diorite is shiny while limestone is rough and banded. This data can help us assume that Diorite was more valuable than limestone however other factors like scarcity and demand play a hand in determining its significance. The Statue of Gudea is a sculpture of the king himself while Memi and Sabu are not Kings or Pharaohs but Royalty. The Statue of Gudea originates from Mesopotamia in Asia while The Royal acquaintance of Memi and Sabu originates from Egypt, Giza in Africa. The appearance and posture of the sculptures have various meanings too. The Statue of Gudea has a sitting with one had in the other as a royalty would sit before his subjects. This statue suggests royalty and power. The Royal acquaintance of Memi and Sabu have a very different position. Memi has his hand over Sabu’s chest while Sabu has her arm wrapped around Memi suggesting intimacy. This Statue may have been designed this way to show love and or unity. Preserving and studying ancient artifact allows us to get a deeper insight into the lives of the people and rulers on the time. We looked at two different statues from two different continents and centuries, they were both similar yet unique and portrayed their culture.
